Former Nigeria U17 coach Fanny Amun (M.O.N) has stated that the focus of Emmanuel Amuneke's team should not just be about winning the title on Sunday against Mali, but being ripe enough to feature for the Super Eagles in the next seven years.
The Golden Eaglets secured a ticket to their eighth final at the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup after a thrilling 4-2 defeat of Mexico in the second semi-final at the Estadio Municipal Ester Roa, Concepcion early on Friday.
Kelechi Nwakali scored a free kick, Orji Okonkwo added a stunner before Osinachi Ebere and Victor Osimhen put the game past El Tri who opened scoring via Kevin Magana as well as a solo beauty by Diego Cortes.
According to the tactician who led the country to win the 1993 Fifa U17 World Cup in Japan with the likes of Kanu Nwankwo and Wilson Oruma, graduating Amuneke’s boys to playing in the Flying Eagles and the Super Eagles would yield dividends for the country.
“It is not compulsory we win the trophy but, how many players are we able to graduate to the U20, U23 and the Super Eagles as a replacement programme,” Amun told Goal.
“I want to see these boys play for the senior national team in seven years’ time.
“We can all see [Kelechi] Iheanacho who is doing well with Manchester City, which is a very good example of how these Golden Eaglets should follow.
“Anyway, there is nothing wrong winning the trophy like Mr. President has requested. They can, and I wish them all the best.”
Nigeria face Mali in an all-African final in Vina Del Mar, he pointed out that the Eaglets must be well coordinated to scale the Malian hurdle.
“One always wishes that they have the coordination as a team because you can have all the best players in the world but when they lack coordination, it becomes a problem,” he continued.
“They [Golden Eaglets] have played so well, however, the number of goals they have scored in this tournament does not matter at this stage, all they need to do is to win.
“I’m not saying they are not a good side but they should utilize all their chances. Amuneke and his boys have done so well and I’m very impressed,” he concluded
