Reps summon Minister, other stakeholders over Virgin Atlantic job cuts

Following the recent mass retrenchment of staff by Virgin Atlantic Airlines, the House of Representatives yesterday summoned the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, and other relevant stakeholders to appear before its committee on Labour and Productivity within the next 48 hours with a view to resolving the contending issues amicably.

The resolution followed a motion on matters of urgent public importance sponsored by the House Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Hon. Gbajabiamila while moving the motion recalled that a motion had been brought before the House to stop the said retrenchment which was referred to the committee on Aviation.
Lamenting, he said: “The laws of this country must be respected. I pray that the Minister of Aviation appears before the committee on Labour and Productivity with the relevant stakeholders”, Gbajabiamila said.
Minority leader of the House, Hon. Leo Ogor observed that the matter was already been attended to and should not be debated as the committee on Aviation was already looking into it.
Before putting the question, the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara said that what the House feared to happen has already happened and that this motion has given the committee of Labour and Productivity a fresh mandate to look into the matter.
He said the issue of unemployment should not be neglected adding that it has become a huge problem to the country.
The motion was passed and adopted after it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara and referred to the Committee on Labour and Productivity for actions.
