The term Xenophobia can be defined in simple terms to mean 'a deep dislike of foreigners'. The current situation in South Africa is disheartening. Africans killing fellow Africans simply because they are domiciled away from their home nations is barbaric to say the least. Incidents like this should never be allowed on African soil and indeed, anywhere in the world.
Considering South Africa's recent past, with special reference to her fight against apartheid, Xenophobia
leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Countries that played active roles in liberating South Africa from
apartheid now have their citizens mugged in broad daylight. Businesses are being destroyed, and precious lives wasted.
The slow response of the Authorities is worrisome. While I commend the South African Government for steps taken to arrest the situation, we must not forget that this event could have been avoided. Another inciting speech by a traditional ruler set the stage for carnage. This should serve as a lesson to prevent future occurrences. The instigators should be reminded that 'reciprocity' is allowed in diplomacy.
We are Africans and we pride ourselves on being a united continent. Our actions should depict UNITY. Africa will only thrive if we do away with sectarian crises. Let's not forget who we are -Zulu proud, Nigerian loud, Namibian crazy, ............ WE ARE AFRICA. Say NO to Xenophobia.
