THE BABYMAMA INDUSTRY

A new industry seems to be thriving all over the world especially in political and entertainment circles -The babymama industry. It didn't start today but the recent proliferation rate is alarming. Single parenthood seems to be the new'cool'. I'm still trying to understand the logic behind this. Immorality is on the rise but that doesn't tell the full story as safe sex and contraception rates are also on the rise. Are people no longer afraid of infections and 'judgement' for the religious? I guess the allure of sex now surpasses the fear of HIV and judgement.

Financial insecurity, fear of commitment, 'not sure he/she is the one', fame and the fear of loneliness are some reasons adduced for this trend. However the side effects outway the gains. Single parenthood is not easy for both parents and children. The children are raised in an alienated environment which is not good for psychological development. Some become objects of ridicule at school and grow up filled with hatred and resentment. Why a man will impregnate a woman with no intention of marrying her beats my imagination. I also don't know why single women will agree to be breeding grounds especially for celebrities who later acquire more babymamas or marry someone else. It is totally unafrican. Fame and fortune are important but so also is dignity.

I am aware that some cases are accidental and Christianity forbids abortion. I am also making exceptions for victims of rape. This is a direct reference to pre-meditated situations. I don't want to believe that some females still think pregnancy will force a man to marry them and vice versa. That's 20th century bullshit. Marriage should be by mutual consent and nobody wants to be cajoled into it by a desperate partner. The popularity of the trend among the rich makes it more impracticable. You don't expect some rich kid to make you a family member just because of pregnancy. The rich make their own rules.

Every child deserves the experience of parental love in a family setting. The harsh economic realities in parts of the world makes it more important for parents to raise their children together. The rising rate of juvenile delinquency may also stem from bad family foundations for children. Marriage may not be all rosy but it's still the safest umbrella to raise our tomorrow's leaders.

I look forward to hearing your comments and inputs on this issue. I may be missing something. No man is an island of knowledge after all. We learn everyday. Kindly share your thoughts. Goodnight and have a pleasant week ahead.
