Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the Senate on Wednesday passed a vote of no confidence on the government of President Muhammadu Buhari over what they perceived as his high-handedness and unfair treatment of perceived political foes.
The legislators at a press conference said emphatically that they are withdrawing their support for the government under the control of the APC with immediate effect, and would sustain the opposition until they are convinced that the government has had a change of heart, and is being fair to everyone irrespective of political lineage.
The effect of this is that Executive Bills and other issues from the Presidency, which had hitherto enjoyed smooth passage in the Senate, would henceforth receive stiff opposition from the PDP members.
The PDP has the numerical strength to frustrate any matter that demands two-thirds majority vote to pass.
The grouse of the PDP Senators, according to them, stemmed mainly from the decision of the executive to prosecute the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike EKweremadu, over alleged involvement in the forgery of Senate Rule in 2015.
The Senate as body had on Sunday and Tuesday, kicked against the Presidency over the planned prosecution of the Senate presiding officers.
In the communique of the meeting, which was read by Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, was counter-signed signed by Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Phillip Aduda, and Senator Biodun Olujimi.
They insisted that what was going on in the name of anti-corruption war by the APC government was actually a witch-hunt of the opposition, while known members of the ruling party found to have been involved in sleaze are protected from the long arms of the law.
The presidency also came under heavy criticism for the freezing of the personal account of the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.
