A former governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday January 29, 2016 called on the President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government to seize any money found in a foreign bank account bearing his name.
In a statement signed by Akpabio’s media assistant, Anietie Ekong, he debunked a newspaper report that he had made a secret attempt to withdraw $7.2 billion from banks in the United Arab Emirate, UAE, through channels in the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Akpabio argued that he does not own any property in Dubai or any other foreign country.
Buhari had said, while presenting the 2016 budget proposal to the National Assembly on December 22, 2015, that his government would recover all the money stolen from Nigeria’s coffers “no matter where it is hidden and no matter how long it will take.”
In a move to accomplish that target, he recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, with the UAE, to enable the extradition of corrupt Nigerians hiding stolen funds in Dubai.
Post-Nigeria learnt that the signed agreement has sent shock waves into the hearts of perceived corrupt Nigerians who in the last decades have seen the UAE as a safe haven for enjoying their looted wealth.
While debunking the alleged report, Akpabio stated that the media report against him was sponsored by his political opponents.
“We challenge these purveyors of falsehood to publish the full details of the purported $7.2 billion account and we urge the Federal Government of Nigeria to seize such sum and prosecute the owner if it does exist.“People should learn to accept the outcome of elections and stop this kind of dangerous propaganda in the name of politics.”.
Earlier, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu and the Former Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar had refuted claims of owing properties in Dubai.
