The Made in Nigeria Campaign By Reuben Abati

There has been renewed talk lately about the need for Nigerians to patronize locally made goods, (someone should have added… and services!).

Championed by Senator Ben Murray Bruce, and supported by the Senate President Bukola Saraki, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Hajia Aisha Abubakar and a large crowd of online campaigners, so much ink, saliva, and emotions have been invested in this old, and perhaps boring story.
Senator Bruce, who goes by the moniker “the Commonsense Senator” even introduced a hashtag #BuyNaijaToGrowtheNaira. He hasn’t quite explained the connection, but with the exchange rate melting down and the Naira yo-yoing, everyone including our neighbourhood electrician, and his friend, the battery charger, have both become experts on the fortunes of the national currency. Senator Saraki has promised that the Public Procurement Act will be amended by the 8th National Assembly to make it mandatory for the government to patronize locally made goods. Minister Aisha Abubakar has proposed a “Patronise Naija Products Campaign.”

'Mr. President, we are killing jobs, not the naira'

In a recent interview with the BBC, President Buhari said: “I have asked the Central Bank Governor and others to sit and see if they can convince me to murder the Naira.” He also said: “Most of our young people can’t get jobs; one of the biggest dangers we face.” During the campaign that led to his election, the President’s party highlighted job creation as its major economic goal. In many discussions, a target to create 3 million jobs was promised, to ensure the bulging youth population is engaged in productive activities. If various estimates are to be believed, approximately 5 million Nigerians come into the workforce annually, yet in the same period, the country struggles to create more than 1.5 million jobs.

"Murtala: Their hero, our villain" -Uche Ezechukwu

Last weekend, on Saturday, February 13th, to be exact, the nation rolled out the red carpet to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of General Murtala Muhammed, Nigeria’s former military head of state whose life was terminated through a brutal assassination by his subordinate military officers, led by Lt Col Bukar Sukar Dimka, as he was heading to work, on that Black Friday morning. "Buhari, Greater than the Constitution?"

“APC is not a party of saints, neither Buhari the Pope’’, Former Ekiti State Governor and Minister of Solid Minerals, Fayemi Kayode, April 2015.
I almost lost my composure when a message recently dropped in my Facebook inbox sent in by an All Progressives Congress, APC, die hard apologists who happened to be my long time friend.
The message reads, “if I were Buhari………I will conspire with my brother Burutai and other guys, plot a coup, address the nation, suspend the constitution……dethrone PMB, install GMB…..Close down NASS (save billions), issue out decree 001 of 2016, set up tribunals in 36 states and Abuja.
“Within one year, corruption will be reduced by 70%! I will rule like that for 3 years, but by 2019, I will drop the kaaki and take my agbada again to run for second term. Before then, I would have removed anything SENATE from our laws, leaving only the house of Reps…..not more than 6 per state.’’
It added: “By the time the Rule of Law will come back, it would have divorced his second wife, Corruption and stick with its first love, Justice.’’
After reading it, I nearly fainted.
Must we throw away the constitution, before we fight corruption? Which is greater, Buhari or the Nigerian constitution? It is just like asking, who is greater, “a pastor or the bible, an imam or the Quran?” myriads of thoughts ran through my mind.
